New network interconnection point in the GASCADE network

Gas pipeline network operator connects Katharina – marketing of capacity begins

Kassel. GASCADE now offers a new entry and exit point in Bobbau (Saxony-Anhalt). From January 30, 2015, the Kassel-based gas pipeline network operator will offer fixed and interruptible capacities on a FCFS basis for the period starting January 1, 2016. The capacities will be marketed via the European capacity platform PRISMA. With the new network interconnection point, the gas transporter has incorporated the Katharina cavern storage facility with a new 37 kilometer connecting pipeline to the Jamal gas connecting pipeline (JAGAL) into its pipeline network and is thus helping to ensure natural-gas supply security in Germany in the winter months.

According to the plans made by the project and operator company Erdgasspeicher Peissen GmbH, the storage facility with a volume of almost 600 million cubic meters will go into operation in stages during 2016. At the Bobbau network interconnection point, it will then be possible to feed up to 11,100,000 kWh/h (around a million cubic meters per hour) of natural gas from the JAGAL into the natural-gas storage facility and from the storage facility into the GASCADE network. To put this into perspective, Berlin needs around half a million cubic meters per hour on cold winter days.
