GASCADE drives transformation forward – with hydrogen infrastructure and sustainable new building in Kassel

GASCADE Gastransport GmbH is actively shaping the energy transition with innovative projects in the hydrogen sector and a sustainable new building at its Kassel site.

Kassel. With the successful launch of the hydrogen program “Flow – making hydrogen happen” and the completion of the shell of the new company headquarters in Kassel, GASCADE Gastransport GmbH is sending two strong signals for a more sustainable future.

As the operator of one of Germany's largest transmission networks, GASCADE began early on to prepare existing natural gas infrastructure for hydrogen transport. A central component of the German hydrogen core network is the “Flow – making hydrogen happen” program. Since February, an existing natural gas pipeline in northeastern Germany has been gradually filled with hydrogen, so that by the end of the year, around 400 kilometers of pipeline between Lubmin on the Baltic Sea coast and Bobbau in Saxony-Anhalt will have been converted. In total, “Flow – making hydrogen happen” will create over 1,600 kilometers of hydrogen pipeline that can supply energy to locations such as Berlin, Erfurt, Ludwigshafen, and Stuttgart.

New headquarters: Sustainability at the Kassel site

GASCADE is also investing in the future in Kassel: Construction of the new company headquarters in Kassel began with the groundbreaking ceremony in July 2024. The shell of the building has now been completed, and the move-in is planned for the end of 2026. The building next to the Kulturbahnhof combines modern working environments with ecological responsibility. The wood-hybrid construction saves around 6,000 tons of CO₂ compared to conventional construction methods. Geothermal energy provides heating and cooling, while photovoltaic systems on the roof and facade cover up to 90 percent of the electricity requirements.

Kassel's mayor, Dr. Sven Schoeller, was impressed during a visit: “GASCADE shows that companies are successfully setting out to transform their business field into a climate-friendly and independent energy supply. Here, experts are working together with European partners to ensure that Germany will have a transport infrastructure in the future that enables a secure supply of hydrogen. The construction of the new company headquarters is a commitment to Kassel as a location. I am very pleased about that. The modern and sustainable construction method can set new standards in Kassel.”

GASCADE employs more than 550 people from 19 countries. Around 70 percent come from the region. “As a Kassel-based company, it is important to us to keep our headquarters here,” emphasizes GASCADE Managing Director Ulrich Benterbusch. “We are continuing to grow, and the new building not only provides us with the space we need, but also sends a strong signal for sustainability and future-oriented action.”
