Act sustainably
Today for tomorrow

We bear responsibility
for people and the environment

Sustainability has evolved from a secondary to the main topic in economic value creation. We bear responsibility – for our network users and business partners, our employees and our environment. As a company, we are aware of the repercussions of our actions: economic, ecological and social objectives must be in harmony so that commercial success is sustainable.

As an energy supply company we have a clear commitment to the climate goals defined in the Paris Agreement, have undertaken to achieve climate neutrality in 2045 and want to make a valuable contribution to the transformation process towards a decarbonised energy world. We therefore implement measures for environmentally friendly gas transmission and are also helping to shape the European hydrogen market right from the outset. We are also aware of our social responsibility and are establishing sustainability in all our work processes. We report annually on our activities and publish our Sustainability Report here.

Our sustainability strategy

For our sustainability strategy we focus on the following four core topics:

More environmentally-friendly gas transport

  • Use of renewable energies
  • Sustainable load flow control
  • Methane emission reduction measures
  • Use of transfer compressors / mobile flares
  • Renaturation and greening measures
  • Energy efficiency

Stable and secure pipeline network

  • Occupational safety
  • HSE measures to prevent accidents
  • Network integrity
  • Avoid system failures and transport interruptions
  • Governance and management systems
  • Digitalisation

Climate-neutral energy supply

  • Development of hydrogen infrastructure
  • New hydrogen projects
  • Rededication of existing pipelines from natural gas to hydrogen

Responsible company

  • Mobility
  • Buildings
  • Supplier management
  • Personnel management
  • Social and local commitment

“zwanzigdreißig!” sustainability programme

We have consolidated our company-wide sustainability commitment in the “zwanzigdreißig!” (twentythirty) programme. Our goal is to establish sustainable guidelines for all business activities by 2030. To that end, employees are working together in an interdisciplinary manner in various projects.

Our sustainability goals

Scope 1 emissions

  • Natural gas-based emissions
  • Motor vehicles owned
  • Diesel/heating oil aggregates
  • Methane emissions

Reduce

  • by 55% by 2025
  • by 60% by 2030

(compared to the base year 2018)

Scope 2 emissions

  • Electricity
  • District heating

Reduce

  • by 30% by 2025
  • by 80% by 2030

(compared to the base year 2022)

Methane emissions

(compared to the base year 2015)

  • Reduce by 50% by 2025

Measures

Technical optimisation of network operations

During repair or maintenance measures, large volumes of gas are pumped from the transport pipelines into other pipeline sections by default. If this transfer is not possible, GASCADE uses a mobile flare so that the less environmentally harmful CO2 is emitted instead of methane. In addition, an infrared camera is used to check for leakages.

Emission reduction in gas analysis

In our gas composition analysis we are working to minimise methane emissions.

Optimisation of exhaust gas emissions

When building new compressor stations or expanding existing ones, we rely on hermetically sealed (emission-free) electric compressors.

Preheating instead of blowing out

Because gas cools down when pressure is reduced, we operate stations with large boiler systems in our transport network for preheating. To depressurise plant areas, we use boiler plants to burn this natural gas, among other things. The natural gas from the plant areas is recovered for energy and not blown out.

Leakage gas recirculation

To reduce methane emissions, a technique of leakage gas recirculation is used, in which sealing gas from station plants is fed into the station heating system.
