GASCADE converts natural gas pipeline to hydrogen

Visible flame in Lubmin: Safe procedure for pipeline conversion.

Kassel/Lubmin. GASCADE Gastransport GmbH (GASCADE) began converting existing natural gas pipelines to hydrogen transport in spring 2025. As part of the infrastructure program “Flow – making hydrogen happen,” around 400 kilometers of hydrogen transport pipelines will be created this year, forming a large part of Germany’s hydrogen core network.

At the Lubmin site, work will soon continue. A so-called hot flare will be used – a controlled open flame that will be visible in the surrounding area. It serves to safely discharge and burn small residual amounts of natural gas that cannot be technically pumped out.

The measures are being carried out under the highest safety standards and are scheduled to be completed by mid-December 2025. The visible flame is no cause for concern, but rather part of a proven technical procedure.
