Temporary operation of a flare stack during commissioning activities.
Kassel/Rehden. The project to expand the Rehden Compressor Station (CS) in the district of Diepholz, Lower Saxony, is approaching its commissioning phase. Starting in mid-July 2026, GASCADE Gastransport GmbH will gradually bring the new facility into operation.
As part of the commissioning process, individual components of the plant will be filled with natural gas in sequence. During this phase, a so-called flare stack will be used on a regular basis. This involves a controlled open flame that will be visible on site and, depending on weather conditions, may also be audible in the surrounding area. The flare serves to safely vent and combust natural gas during the gas-filling procedures.
All activities are being carried out in accordance with the highest safety standards. The visible flame is not a cause for concern but rather an integral part of a safe and established technical process.
Once the three additional electric compressors are commissioned, the Rehden CS will be able to transport larger volumes of natural gas towards Lubmin. The facility will therefore make an important contribution to further strengthening security of supply in eastern Germany as well as in neighboring countries in Central and Southeastern Europe.
The full completion of the overall project, including all buildings, external facilities, and the completion of recultivation measures, is scheduled for the end of 2027.
