The Baltic Sea Pipeline Link (OPAL) went into operation in 2011 to bring large volumes of natural gas to Europe. The 473 km long OPAL, which can transport up to 36 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year, runs from Greifswald on the Baltic Sea coast through the German states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Brandenburg and Saxony to the Czech Republic.
